Colorful parakeets | Exotic birds

Parakeets are one of the most common companion birds. However, did you know that within the family of parakeets these can be distinguished in several ways? For example, within the Australian parakeets, we find what are known as colored parakeets.

How did these parakeets arise?

The colored parakeets are the result of the mutations that the nominal species of the Australian parakeet has undergone when reproducing, both naturally and by human hands, with other birds of the same family.

As a result, what is known as colored parakeets emerged, birds that turn out to be quite beautiful to look at.

How many colored varieties of parakeets are there?

If we simply base ourselves on what would be the color parakeet mutations, we find that there are a total of nine color varieties :

Bay parakeets

It is also known as flavored parakeets, which have a yellow mask, which can also be white, with two violet (or blue) gular spots, in addition to six brown pearls. The ripples occupy its head, neck, back, and wings, which are also a brown color reminiscent of pearls. Remiges are also brown in color, but with a hint of gray, like their tail feathers. As a general rule, the color of its body is greenish-yellow, or bluish-white. Their eyes are red in color and males are waxy pink or bluish-pink, while the female is bluish-white to dark brown.

Black-eyed parakeets

They are very similar to inos parakeets since the color of their feathers is yellow or white, but their eyes are black with white irises.

Clear body parakeets

It could be said that they are identical to common parakeets, except that their body color is light, both yellow and white, in addition to the fact that the remiges and tail feathers are lighter tones. They are endemic to Texas.

Saddlebacks parakeets

If there is something that characterizes this mutation, it is that they have a V-shaped pattern on the nape, the back, and the back of the wings. This drawing is formed by the presence of gray ripples on the light background of this part of the body. On the rest of its wings, the ripples are black with a light background.

Blackface parakeets

Slate parakeets

The mask on her face is white with six black pearls and two dark purple gular spots. The wavy markings on its body are black, with a white background, and the body color is a fairly intense blue-gray, almost black.

Anthracite parakeets

The color of their feathers is almost completely black, or dark gray. The main difference from slate-colored parakeets is the bluish tinge of their feathers, which is slightly lighter.

Half-sider parakeets

Half of its body has colored lines, but with a vertical line, its body is cut by a blue portion and a green portion. Some specimens may have two different colors on each half of their body.

Mottled parakeets

At first glance, they may look like normal parakeets, but after their first molt, yellow or white spots begin to appear on their feathers. They first appear on the back and lower abdomen, and little by little they spread throughout the rest of the parakeet’s body.

Do they require any special care?

Even if it is a mutation of the nominal species, there is no need to worry. The care is the same as for a normal parakeet.

Their cage has to be of medium size, since they usually measure between 10 – 18 cm, with a rectangular or square shape. You already know that it is very stressful for birds to live in cages with oval or house-shaped cages. And with the bars that are not too far apart to prevent them from escaping.

The diet is mainly made up of birdseed, with millet, hempseed, corn … but it can also be given a little breadcrumbs or some fruit and vegetables. For them to live better, in the water it is advisable to add some vitamin complex, thus taking care of their feathers.

Remember also that you must avoid putting your cage in a place where it can perceive a lot of noise, such as the balcony, or that can be exposed to drafts. The cage should also not be in the kitchen or in areas where the bird may be exposed to smoke.
