Cuban Amazon | Exotic birds

Who said choosing a bird as a companion was easy? No one, but do not be nervous, because there are many to choose from. How, for example, the Cuban Amazon. It sure interests you.

What is this bird?

The Cuban Amazon belongs to the parrot family and is known among poultry experts as the Amazon leucocephala. Originally from Cuba, it can also be seen on some surrounding islands.

Until recently it was considered a rarity in the world of poultry, until the mid-1980s it began to be common. In Florida, many specimens arrived with Cuban immigrants who took their parrots with them, which caused the species to spread across the American continent slowly.

How is this bird?

The Cuban Amazon is considered one of the most beautiful specimens of the Amazon family. It measures 34 centimeters and can weigh 450 grams.

What makes it stand out like a bird of great beauty is not the greenish tone of its plumage, which covers the entire body, but rather the pinkish tone of the face, throat, and upper chest, which also it can be present as spots on the rest of the body. The visible part of the body plumage has an oval effect, which makes it appear that its feathers are located in a layered model. The primary feathers may be bluish in color.

On its face, arising from the eye ring, it has a kind of white mask, which may have more or less intensity depending on the specimen. Their irises are red in color, while the beak and legs share the grayish color common in this species.

It seems that it is closely related to the Amazona ventralis since they are almost the same. However, it has a less strong color in the greenish tone of the plumage.

Four subspecies have been recognized for this type of Amazon:

  • Amazona Leucocephala Bahamensis: The Cuban Amazon of the Bahamas that measures the same as the nominal species, but the white color of the face is more extensive and usually extends over the area of the eyes. The pinkish tint on the chest is almost imperceptible.
  • Amazona Leucocephala Caymanensis: It is a very common type of amazon from Cayman Island. Similar to the original species, only the green color of the plumage has a more yellowish hue. Also, the white of the forehead extends towards the eyes, the edges of the feathers are lighter shades and in the pink area of the face, some feathers have a green color.
  • Amazona Leucocephala Hesterna: It is another variant of the Cayman Islands, and in order not to confuse it with the previous subspecies, it is known as the Cuban Amazon of Cayman Brac. It is a smaller specimen that measures about 30 centimeters. The shade of the feather has a yellowish-green hue, while the maroon patch on the abdomen is broad and approaching purple. On the back of the neck, it has an intense red coloration.
  • Amazona Leucocephala Palmarum: The Cuban Amazon from the West, is another smaller specimen, measuring 32 centimeters, and the greenish tone of its plumage is darker, with the purple color of the larger breast area and the more intense red of the throat…

It is the pet I want, what do I have to know to take care of it?

Given that today it is such a widespread species, it does not cost much to get hold of some specimen of the Cuban Amazon species. It does not take long to adapt to new environments, so there is no problem when it comes to having it as another pet in the family.

Of course, you have to know that this type of pet requires a very characteristic diet of the island of Cuba. It can be adapted to a diet from the European continent, but the best thing would be to give it seeds, fruits, and vegetables typical of the Cuban area so that it continues to receive the nutrients to which your body is accustomed. Also, sudden temperature changes are not good for her, so if she moves to a colder region, a heat source has to be installed in her cage.

The cage has to be large so that this bird can move freely inside it since it likes to fly inside it from one place to another. You can have it quietly at home without any problems since it is a bird with a friendly and affectionate character. Of course, first of all, you have to earn their trust well because at first, they will be a bit skeptical about being in their new home.

For its breeding, it is better to leave it in the hands of expert breeders, since although there is a high success rate compared to other specimens, a series of special conditions must be met for its reproduction; choose the right specimens, room temperature, cage interior, feeding …
