Red rump | Exotic birds

Sure the name of the red rump is quite funny to you, but the truth is that it is one of the most common pet birds in some countries. When you know more about this species, you will surely want to have it with you.

A rather curious bird

This bird is native to Australia and is distributed in Queensland, South Australia, New Wales, and Victoria. It receives the scientific name of psephotus haematonotus and belongs to the family of parakeets.

When they live in the wild they like to live in open areas where trees are not predominant. They always live near water and can frequent urban areas, such as parks and gardens. They only go down to the ground when they go in search of food.

An easy bird to differentiate

It is a bird that usually measures around 28 centimeters in length and weighs around 55 to 80 grams. The male has a larger wingspan than the female, in addition to the fact that its beak is dark in color, its chest is green with a bluish hue at its anterior end, which also extends in the front of the head and the wings in the ventral part. it is yellowish in color. It also has a red spot on the lower back, which is why it is called the red rump. These characteristics are not present in the female.

Regarding its character, the truth is that it is a fairly calm bird. It does not present many problems when it comes to interacting with members of the same species or with members of other families, as long as it is not in the breeding season, at which time it becomes a little more violent.

A subspecies known as Psephotus haematonotus caerúletus has been identified, in which both sexes are paler in color, but the male has a bluer hue and the red of the rump is a paler hue. The female has a grayish-green nape and coat. Lives in the South Australian area.

What do you have to know to keep it in captivity?

The truth is that it is a bird that is not threatened, which makes it quite easy to get a copy to keep at home. Also, its care could not be easier.

Because of its precise size of a large cage, especially because it likes to fly a lot, so you have to offer it a cage that is longer than it is high so that it can fly between the different perches and thus stretch its wings. It is difficult to gain their trust, but if it is trained to pose on the hand or finger, it can be loosened around the house without much trouble.

It is a pleasure to have it as a pet since it adapts very well to any type of diet. This is based on fruits and vegetables, but when they are in the breeding period they should be given common egg pasta. The fruit and vegetables must always be fresh and well washed to avoid the appearance of worms or parasites in the bird.

Reproduction is not available to inexperienced breeders. Their large size means that they have a large cage for the couple and they must have a good nest. Besides, they have to eat certain fruits during the reproduction process and be very aware that everything is correct inside the cage. It is best left to more experienced breeders.

They are quite long-lived birds, since they live on average about 15 years, much longer than several of their parakeet relatives. If it is raised well, some specimens have reached 20 years.
