Splendid parakeet | Exotic birds

Are you completely clear that what you want is to have a parakeet as a pet? Now comes the hardest part, which of all the variants are you going to choose? Because if you want a recommendation, you should still try the splendid parakeet.

What is the splendid parakeet?

It is also known by its scientific name of neophema splendid and is characterized by having quite colorful feathers. They are usually distributed by arid thickets that are mainly composed of acacias and eucalyptus.

They can also be seen living in wooded areas that are dominated by Causain, as well as in areas of soil that have large blankets of Triodia grass or that are covered by spinifex.

How beautiful is your appearance?

Within the family of parakeets, the truth is that it is not the largest, since it usually measures between 19 – 20 cm and weighs around 40 grams. But if there is something that characterizes it, it is that it is quite colorful.

His face and forehead are bright turquoise blue, darkening in the throat and chin area. The upperparts, meanwhile, are light green. The curvature of the wings is dark blue, while the wing coverts are the same color as the feathers on the face. The primary feathers are black, with a light blue wash, while the secondary feathers have a greenish-blue edge. The lower part is dark blue, while the chest is scarlet.

Its beak is black, with dark brown irises and gray-brown legs. The female has more muted tones than the male, in addition to the fact that the belly and chest are green and the blue color of the face is restricted, so it is a sexual dimorphism that helps to differentiate the sex. The males are equal to the females when they are young, but at four months they begin to obtain their mature plumage.

Due to the mixture of this bird with other birds of the same species, this has resulted in different mutations, in which specimens known as Aqua or Blue can be found in which the bluish color prevails, the pale with lighter tones like gray, the Ino whose mutation is recessively linked to sex or pastel tones, but this is not common in Europe.

Do you have to know anything special about your care?

It is not only characterized by being a quite beautiful bird, but also by being very easy to keep in captivity. His character is peaceful and quiet and over time he gains the trust of his care. One of its greatest advantages is that it is resistant to cold, but with the downside that it is sensitive to humidity, fog, and drafts. Therefore, you have to be very careful with where your cage will be located to prevent it from catching a cold.

One of its peculiarities is that this bird feeds on the ground, where it will have to put its food, mainly it feeds on seeds so it can be given a normal and ordinary mixture for parakeets. This means that from time to time the soil will have to be disinfected, to avoid the appearance of parasites that can harm the health of the parakeet.

On the other hand, its peaceful nature helps that there are not many problems when it comes to interacting with other birds of the same species, but it is not highly recommended that it be placed in a cage with specimens that are larger than it as it could be intimidating. If they are smaller, nothing happens, since they are not a bird that usually has an air of “superiority”.

Its reproduction turns out to be quite simple, so any novice breeder could get two copies of this species to have young. Its life expectancy in captivity is usually around 14 years, although getting it to live a little longer than that would not be entirely impossible. Of the family of parakeets, there is no better companion than this.
